“Art is not what you see but what you make others see”

ABSTRACT art………what actually is it?
Consider a painting where reality is not recorded, but is felt. Art that doesn’t have to show you something, to tell you something. Maybe you’re not looking at just a painting but beginning a conversation. That is Abstract art.
Although many people believe abstract art is fairly modern, abstract artwork began at the start of the 1900s with experiments in painting. But, it only really came into it’s own in the mid 20th century.
Abstract art focuses on how you feel when looking at the artwork rather than a realistic copy of what you see, or what you’ve seen.
What I mean is, rather than showing you what something looks like, abstract art focuses on how it feels for you, when you look at it.
Abstract art uses colour, shape, form, and movement to suggest, express, whisper or scream, emotions and meaning.
Abstract art proves that meaning doesn’t need literal imagery, it is not made to imitate; but through colour, movement, and composition, it can create atmosphere, energy, and visual balance in the space it resides.
Simply filling an area is not ideal, instead choose art that defines that space. Perhaps a dramatic large canvas or maybe a more subtle minimalist piece, will make the space feel thoughtful, complete.
Why does abstract art matter.
Because abstract art does not have a defined, realistic subject, it invites viewers to bring their own emotions, memories, and experiences to the piece, creating a personal, interactive experience.
As it allows for personal interpretation, abstract art can create a direct and often deep emotional engagement.
While some pieces of abstract art may challenge you, other abstract art will give the effect of reduced stress and can relax you.
Abstract art breaks free from traditional art practices, expanding the essence of art and beauty. It has a timeless appeal as it does not have date that it can be assigned to. It has no reference point.
As an abstract artist I am both lucky and unlucky, sad and happy. When I start a piece, it is planned. In my mind I am a good artist and I’m aiming for excellence, each stroke, each colour correctly placed. Then as I’m working through the piece, I realise how incomplete my pilgrimage is and I am but a student.
I’m on a journey for which there is no end. I feel I will never reach my dream piece.
Realising the journey is the destination, I find joy in experimentation and learning.
Each piece being a part of my puzzle. An ever growing puzzle.
It is a corner and beyond that corner the view changes, and the art evolves.

Nights are given to us to make sense of the days and to enjoy our worlds in different ways.
To dream of worlds that glow in the dark, and of places to visit that leave their mark.
