“Art is not what you see but what     you make others see.”

Edgar Degar

You’re travelling  along a road you’ve travelled “a thousand times before”,

but this time; a particular tree, house, hill or some other thing,

seems to stand out, catch your eye.

I find it’s usually because it’s caught in a different light.

It seems more vivid and thus stands out more.

I enjoy these little surprises, they make my life richer.

And this is how I approach my painting.

I very much admire the masters and how they catch the effect of sun or moonlight on their works.

My abstract works use colour to gain a place of attention. Typically the artwork is seen as a whole, however there is a place on the piece where the eye is attracted. Like the sun in a garden usually in the morning or evening when the sun is lower in the sky.

And isn’t it a gift when the sun shows off the colour in a garden immediately after the rain.

‍ This painting I think shows what I mean.

I created this by using paints that I dripped onto the canvas and then by blowing the dripped paint they collide, combine, mingle, touch and interbreed. Then amongst the lush of colour the “sun” blooms through.

Not all my works are like this, some catch light through texture, and when a light is shone onto the texture the artwork can appear more dramatic or interesting.
